Other characters: Max Caulfield
IN-CHARACTER:
Character name: Penny Polendina
Character journal:
combatready
Series name: RWBY
Canon notes: Original universe, post-S3E9 (in other words, post-death)
Species: Robot (designed for combat, possesses a “soul”)
History: A far too detailed wikia
Personality:
The first thing one might note about Penny is how all of her interactions seem... off. That is because Penny is, well, a robot. Because of this, she does some actions that might seem robotic. Even aside that, a lot of her actions are simply eyebrow-raising. That’s because she’s imitating what she thinks normal people do, but without the actual social skills, observations, or background to act that way naturally. She is a robot imitating human mannerisms. Even if she means her actions and words with 100% of her (robotic) heart, her words still come out unnatural and her actions are still done in a way to call her nature into question.
But Penny is sincere. She’s not lying or tricking people when she laughs at a joke or compliments a person or feels nervous or anything else. Every smile is genuine. Every emotion she feels, she feels strongly. And she wears her emotions on her sleeve. But it’s all real. Penny doesn’t fake those, doesn’t pretend. She is, in fact, very bad at lying and pretending. So bad that she hiccups when lying, the world’s most obvious tell.
Penny is made of enthusiasm. She throws herself into every action, every plan, every fight, and every social interaction as if it’s the most important thing in the world. When she sets a goal, she follows through. When she has an idea, she will gush about it, and then follow through. When she sees a friend, she throws herself into their arms. It ties in with how she views things and feels things – intensely. It’s true Penny isn’t human, but that just means that she doesn’t put any limits on herself.
This is especially true for friendship. Penny feels friendship more passionately than normal, too, and it’s only emboldened by the fact she is a robot, not used to having them. She makes friends easily, but she makes them intensely. She will fight for her friends, put everything on the line. She will trust with every fiber of her being, and love with all her heart. Being Penny’s friend can be a rollercoaster ride, but it has a lot more ups than downs.
Despite all of her good qualities, and all of her usual cheerfulness, Penny is still very conscious of the fact that she is a robot. In her own words, “I’m not a real girl.” If Penny had any doubts, it would be in that. She knows she’s not human, but she doesn’t want to be different, not like that. And she worries deeply about being accepted by others because of it. That’s why she doesn’t fight the orders given to hide her true nature.
Penny’s orders come through the Atlesian military. She is a combat robot, and although she considers her creator to be her father, he received his support through the Atlesian military, and Penny owes her loyalty to them as well. The military tells her that she was created to “save the world,” something she believes. That’s why she exists, that’s why she fights. And that’s why she’ll fight to protect others as well.
Overall, Penny is a precious, adorable girl who wants to make friends and protect the world. She also happens to be a little odd on account of being a robot, but really, that’s not a bad thing.
Abilities: Penny is a robot! And a robot meant to fight at anime-levels at that. This comes with such abilities as super-strength and durability, the ability to be fixed when broken, and mad combat skills. However, her real combat skills and powers only come into play with her weapons, combination sword/guns that are remotely controlled through metal strings, which I’m assuming she won’t have when she arrives? They're kind of attached and powered through wires attached to her but hey.
Also, since she is a robot, she presumably can do such robot-things as run calculations in her head, etc. Things you’d expect from somebody who is basically a computer.
And lastly, since she can produce aura, she.... actually I don’t think she does much with it. Other than confuse people who can sense that sort of things I guess. Supposedly, it helps protect her from injury but we see how well that worked in canon.
